C.J. McCollum

Damian Lillard

Portland Trail Blazers

2015-16 Season Record: 44-38 (-7 wins from 2014-15)

Departures:

PG Brian Roberts--> Hornets

SG Gerald Henderson--> 76ers

SF Luis Montero

PF Cliff Alexander

C Chris Kaman

The Trail Blazers did the right thing and committed to a young core that outperformed every expectation last season. Veterans like Henderson and Kaman are gone, which is fine considering the relatively little impact they had on the court. The question is whether their off-court presence can be made up with their additions.

Additions:

PG Shabazz Napier (Traded from Magic)

PG Tim Quarterman (Undrafted Rookie)

G/F Evan Turner (Celtics)

C Festus Ezeli (Warriors)

Ezeli joins Portland from the Warriors, where he can provide a nice rim protection benefit none of their other bigs can. Turner adds to a collection of wings who are versatile enough to play multiple positions, yet he comes with top lottery pick pedigree. Expect him to play some PG when Damian Lillard comes off the floor. Portland is hoping 3rd time's the charm with Shabazz Napier, who joins his third team in 3 years after winning a title at UConn.

Draft Picks: SF Jake Layman (47th)

Team Needs: Backup PG, PF

Portland bought this pick to draft Layman, a forward from Maryland who has 3 and D potential like Maurice Harkless and Al-Farouq Aminu. Layman probably won't be expected to contribute in a major way this season, but he can learn behind similar players for future seasons.

Player Decisions:

PG Tim Quarterman (.54 million non-guaranteed)--> Cut

I don't expect any of these players to make the final roster. Montero was with the team last season, but underwhelmed. Quarterman was the PG for LSU last season alongside Ben Simmons, but I expect to see him play in the D-League before the NBA.

Draft and Stash Prospects:

PF Dani Diez (36th)

Current Roster (WAR/82):

PG Damian Lillard (8.36)

PG Shabazz Napier (-.69)

PG Tim Quarterman (Rookie)

G C.J. McCollum (9.78)

SG Pat Connaughton (-.02)

G/F Allen Crabbe (.98)

G/F Evan Turner (2.28)

SF Maurice Harkless (2.10)

SF Jake Layman (Rookie)

F Al-Farouq Aminu (7.34)

PF Noah Vonleh (.03)

F/C Ed Davis (6.12)

C Festus Ezeli (4.12)

C Meyers Leonard (2.30)

C Mason Plumlee (7.45)

Current WAR/82: 50.15 (does not include rookies)

Projected Record: 46-36 (7th in West)
